Federal Government Cooperates (?!?!) To Curb Robocalls

The crux of this bulletin will of course be about the new law passed at the end of 2019 to address the increasingly dastardly robocallers.

However, I just want to take a second to commend the U.S. Federal government for doing something we all need. As many politicians have said, there are many issues that most Americans agree on, so putting aside political differences to address the no-brainers shouldn’t be but is laudable.

Ok, on to business.

At the end of 2019, President Trump signed into law the Pallone-Thune Telephone Robocall Abuse Criminal Enforcement and Deterrence Act. Mouthful, right? Well, luckily we just use the first letters and call it the TRACED Act.

It represents the government’s first major attempt in curtailing robocalls in quite some time. And for consumers, that almost certainly is a good thing. Some of the features of the law include:

  • Increasing the potential fines to violators and lengthening the statute of limitations
  • Raising pressure on government agencies, especially the FCC, to make more rules to protect consumers
  • Requires carriers to work on a technical solution to prevent the dreaded “call spoofing” tactics
  • Makes available DOJ prosecutions for offenders

The law was recently enacted, but I’m assuming you’re still getting robocalls. Yes, it’s true. We didn’t wave the magic wand to make the problem go away. In all likelihood, we’ll be dealing with this problem for a long time to come.

BUT! It’s going to get better! We just have to keep putting one foot in front of the other to stop fraud in our economy. And this is the right first step.
