They are becoming such a ubiquitous form of communication that understanding what they are, how they're used, and what they mean is actually moving toward table stakes for anyone doing sales. (Shocking, right?)
Back in October the Unicode Consortium, the organization responsible for governing the emojification of the world, published the ten most used emojis.
But before we reveal them take a look at your phone, and see if you can guess what they actually are!
(Hint: Six are faces, and four involve other parts of the body.)

1. 😂 Face With Tears of Joy
A yellow face with a big grin, uplifted eyebrows, and smiling eyes, each shedding a tear from laughing so hard. Widely used to show something is funny or pleasing.
2. ❤️ Red Heart
A classic love heart emoji, used for expressions of love. Displayed in various shades of red on most platforms. A similar emoji exists for the heart suit in a deck of playing cards.
3. 😍 Smiling Face With Heart-Eyes
A yellow face with an open smile, sometimes showing teeth, and red, cartoon-styled hearts for eyes. Often conveys enthusiastic feelings of love, infatuation, and adoration.
4. 🤣 Rolling on the Floor Laughing
A yellow face with a big grin and scrunched, X-shaped eyes, tilted on its side as if rolling on the floor laughing (the internet acronym ROFL). Sheds two tears and tilts right on most platforms.
5. 😊 Smiling Face With Smiling Eyes
A yellow face with smiling eyes and a broad, closed smile turning up to rosy cheeks. Often expresses genuine happiness and warm, positive feelings.
6. 🙏 Folded Hands
Two hands placed firmly together, meaning please or thank you in Japanese culture. A common alternative use for this emoji is for prayer, using the same gesture as praying hands. Rarely: a high-five.
7. 💕 Two Hearts
Two pink love hearts. One larger than the other. Can be used to display that “love is in the air”.
8. 😭 Loudly Crying Face
A yellow face with an open mouth wailing and streams of heavy tears flowing from closed eyes. May convey inconsolable grief but also other intense feelings, such as uncontrollable laughter or overwhelming joy.
9. 😘 Face Blowing a Kiss
A yellow face winking with puckered lips blowing a kiss, depicted as a small, red heart. May represent a kiss goodbye or good night and convey feelings of love and affection more generally.
10. 👍 Thumbs Up
A thumbs-up gesture indicating approval.
